                                                 WILD TALES

A YEAR OF ATTACKS ON CIVILIZATION
                                                 WAY OF “CIVILIZED” COUNTRIES

There is a small book, from Brazilian philosopher and thinker Vladimir
Safatle, Só mais um esforço (Just one more effort), published by Editora Três
Estrelas, which should be read if we intend to understand the uncertainties
and setbacks in which we are immersed in recent years and that accelerated,
to the surprise of those who had not been warned yet, in the last year.
ART, not by chance, was target or mediator, at different times, of numerous
conflicts where attacks, whether gender differences, class or religion, has
                                                 been intensifying in global scale.
We delude ourselves. We thought, in so far as we could a certain economic
and social balance (up to the crises that began in 2008), those that held
a kind of economic and ideological power would understand, as did the
English and French, liberal bourgeoisie of the 19th century, the importance
of divide the cake better. To defend the freedom, equality and fraternity.
We could achieve a conciliation model of liberal democracy.
Well, none of this happened. Not only we couldn’t deepen the path of social
balance, respect for each other as we went back at a fast rate. As Warren
Buffett, the millionaire, said: “who says there is no class struggle? Of course
there is and we’re winning. “.
It is true that those who do not lose purchasing power and participation in
the share capital, is still buying art, but the true connoisseur of art is also
                                                 missing.
The art loses when it becomes object or is submited to be - and it is not today
that this occurs - “vampirized”, “pasteurized”, to take account of certain
values. And this comes exactly against it’s value par excellence: to express
the freedom of each subject and each one that makes contact with art.
In the first quarter only Trump in the USA with your anti-immigration
policy, was convicted of various movements and artistic institutions which
has always defended the inclusion of any nationality in casts. Doria, the

left “cleaning” walls (not city opened sewers) restricting the work of graffiti
artists, an existing expression from the years 70 that was growing and
unfolding in different lines, and even a tendency the Street Art.
In the second half of the year catholic, evangelical groups, and neo-fascists
came out hitting employees who defended exhibitions, as in the case of the
MAM-SP, with the performance of a naked body, threatening legally or in
networks, and getting that the institutions works as censorships, as was
the case of Santander who closed the show “Queermuseu-Cartographies
of the difference in art”, in Porto Alegre, and of Masp in Sao Paulo, which
placed restrictions on groups for the visitation of the exhibition “Stories
of sexuality” for containing alleged provocative images.
ARTE!Brasileiros created spaces and produced during this year’s meetings
and numerous articles about the place of art as resistance and as a place
to speak in defence of your own survival.
It is necessary to defend the art and culture as generating powers of the best
individual qualities of men, your ability to express your conflicts, whether
through the beauty of a naked body, the color or the death. It’s about this
and much more you will read in the pages of this edition.
