IN SEARCH OF FRESH AIR
BY PATRICIA ROUSSEAUX, EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
On the day of the closing of this issue, ARTE!Brasileiros and the world were deep moved
with the brutal murder, a clear execution, of Marielle Franco, woman, black, human rights
activist, Rio de Janeiro’s council woman, representing more than 56,000 voters, and
her driver Anderson Gomes.
In a true act of provocation to the validity of a so-called free political regime, militia and
who financed it kill with impunity tryin g to shut up the voices of who dares to defend
social rights: health, education, culture, choose how to dress or to love, be woman, man,
transgender or parrot.
With the rise of Trump in the USA, the impeachment in Brazil and other movements
opposed to democratic life in various countries,“exacerbated deliberately the waves
of racism, xenophobia and sexism that were dormant but not legitimised”, says the
philosopher and American professor Noam Chomsky, one of the most important thinkers
in contemporary times.
In his opinion, the increasing economic concentration and polarization created by
neoliberalism, produced a depreciation of everyday life for most people in different
continents. A certain depression and a lack of hope in change.
However, regardless of the need to find the right flags for a concentration of forces could
allows deep structura changes for a fairer society, any intervention of artists and cultural
agents in the reflection’s service about the contemporaries worries and suffering, are
fundamental.
This issue brings countless examples of cultural institutions, modern and contemporary
artists, conceptual or not, photographers, who focused their researches, pictures,
sculptures and projects depicting how, in a story that repeats itself, the power of economic
and political conservatives sectors try to subject citizens and their freedom of expression.
To watch the beauty or to be shocked with their work allows us to take some air and move on.
